Port Alberni Weekend Itinerary

If you’re looking to plan a Port Alberni weekend itinerary, then in this post I’m going to share the best places to stay, eat, and explore in this fishing town on Vancouver Island. I suspect most people who are visiting Vancouver or Vancouver Island for the first time have never even heard of Port Alberni – so let me be the first to tell you how much of a gem it is. While many tourists from Mainland British Columbia and the lower mainland venture to Tofino and Ucluelet in the summer, stopping in Port Alberni is worth more than just a lunch break. Its central location on the island makes it a great home base for adventures both on the west coast of the island as well as many of the amazing provincial parks and hikes in the central part of the island. There aren’t other towns along this lonely stretch of Route 4 but Port Alberni really holds its own with a collection of great restaurants, coffee shops and breweries, a cute downtown with river stroll, and unparalleled nature access within a few minutes drive. Hopefully this post will convince you to stay awhile or dawdle longer next time you are driving across Vancouver Island.

Where to Stay in Port Alberni

For a comfortable and cozy weekend, you’re more likely to find a good rental property room like this one. There are limited hotel options in the city, but the best rated one is the Best Western. If you’d prefer to camp, Stamp River Provincial Park has sites, however most BC park sites open three months out and are competitive to book so keep that in mind!

Where to Eat in Port Alberni

Since this is one of Canada’s salmon capitals, fresh fish should be at the top of your list.

A Weekend Itinerary in Port Alberni

Day one begins at the Harbor Quay, where you can stroll the waterfront, grab lunch at Spice Hut, and browse the shops. As evening falls, head to Victoria Quay with binoculars and watch for black bears fishing for salmon across the river.

On day two, start with a hearty breakfast at Witch’s Brew before driving to Stamp River Provincial Park. Wander along the gorge trail, watch salmon jumping at the fish ladder, and keep an eye out for bears (you’ll probably encounter many nature watchers with huge telescopic cameras – follow them!). In the afternoon, spend a few hours at Sproat Lake, where you can see ancient petroglyphs and hike at Fosley Provincial Park with its suspension bridge. Wrap up the day with fish and chips at Bare Bones and sunset beers at Dog Mountain Brewing (they have a nice rooftop patio).

If you’ve got an extra day, you can add in some local gems: Stokes Creek Falls, the Alberni Valley Lookout, the quirky Hole in the Wall trail, or a paddleboard session on the turquoise waters of the Taylor River Rest Area.

More experienced hikers can challenge themselves with the 5040 Peak hike, a rugged trail leading to an alpine lake as well as a summit and alpine hut at the top with panoramic views of the mountains in the area. Unfortunately when we hiked it, we didn’t get any views at the very top but I hear they are incredible and I hope to go back to find out.

Excursions on the Way to Port Alberni

The drive from Nanaimo or Victoria to Port Alberni is full of scenic stops. MacMillan Provincial Park is home to Cathedral Grove, an old-growth forest of towering Douglas firs, and nearby Little Qualicum Falls offers a short trail with upper and lower waterfall viewpoints. These stops help break up the drive and add some bathroom opportunities!
